—■ ■♦»» SCHOOL COMMITTEE. FBOM OT7B OWN COBKESPONDBNT. The Kaitangata School Committee held a special meeting on Friday evening, there being present Messrs D. Marshall (chairman), H. Seaman, T. 'Middlej mass, J. W. Shanks, J. Thompson, W. j Clarksou and A. Macintosh. The ehair- | man explained that he had received a i telegram from the secretary of the I Education Board stating that* Mr T. E. I Eggleton, who had recently been ap- ! pointed first assistant for the school, had declined to accept the position. The board further stated that the committee might select a candidate from the remaining names previously submitted. Mr Clarkson, secretary, expressed surprise at the aetion of Mr Eggleton, who had written asking him to arrange for board in the town. Arrangements had been completed and Mr Eggleton notified to that effect. No doubt there would be some explanation forthcoming from the board or Mr Eggleton himself. After discussion it was agreed to ask the board to call for fresh applications for the position; failing fhis course being adopted the committee would recommend the appointment of Mr Cowan, Milton. In moving the motion it was pointed out that since the committee had selected LMr Eggleton the applicants who had been rejected in favour of that teacher might have already applied for positions in other schools, or they might now feel disinclined to accept the position previously denied them. •Arrangements for the annual winter holidays were left with the chairman and headmaster to deal with. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting. [ BAND OF HOPE. A pleasant evening's entertainment was provided at the Band of Hope rally held in the Church Hall on Friday evening. The attendance was most encouraging to the adult and juvenile performers, who acquitted themselves very creditably. The chairs on the platform were occupied by Mr Burnard and Revs. Noble and 'MeDowall. BOWLING CLUB. The havoc wrought by the grass grub has lately been much in evidence on the Kaitangata bowling club's green. To combat the pest it has been arranged to apply a liberal sprinkling of perchloride of mercury over the' whole of the playing area and to give a good coating of tar to the channels around the green. At a meeting on Friday evening it was unanimously decided to give a social to the many lady friends of the club. Members considered it about time that they should recognise in some suitable form the many kindnesses hitherto shown by their lady friends, whose presence on the green materially assisted in making the club's functions a complete success. The date fixed for the social is May 26. MINERS' UNION. The miners of Kaitangata have accepted an offer by the company of a war ' bonus of 10 per cent, upon the present • rate of wages. Tn addition to the com- • pany has agreed that uo increase upon the present prices paid for coal and ex- j plosives shall be charged against its employees. The agreement shall take effect as from May 29 and continue until the expiration of one year.
