KAITANGATA NEWS.

fBOM OOH OWN COEEIIBPONDINT FOOTBALL CLUB.

A general meeting of the Kait&ngata Association Football Club was held in the Bridge Hotel on Saturday evening. Mr James Thompson occupied the-chair. Mr Jas. Robertson, secretary of the Nightcaps Club, wrote stating that should the Kaitangata Club be willing to play their annual fixture his club's team could arrive in Kaitangata on Good Friday and play the mateh on the following day. It was decided to play the annual fixture and to entertain the visitors.

The secretary of the O.F.A. wrote stating that he held the Mornington Club's receipt for iii 2s, being expenses in connection with the Charity match played in Kaitaugata. He wished the local club to give publicity to the fact that the Mornington players had not refunded their expenses as reported by a member of the Kaitangata Club at the annual meeting.—Mr Lang, who raised the question at the annual meeting, stated that he was satisfied with the O.F.A. letter and was prepared to drop the matter. Upon being requested to give the name of the Mornington player who told him that a refund was made to the O.F.A. he declined to give it.

It was decided to increase the size of the playing area on the local grounds, ami to mark off the touch-lines in white instead of the old method of furrowing the lines. The Green Island Club is to be asked if it can send a second-grade team to play a match on Good Friday or Easter Monday.

Entries for the second-grade competition for the Cairns' Cup will close at the end of the month.

As Saturday proved too wet for opening the season, it was decided to postpone the opening day till next Saturda Quotations for jerseys for players will be considered at next meeting. A vote of thanks to the chair closed the meeting. GENERAL. The Kaitangata Defence Rifle Club held a field day on Saturday, when J9 shootists and a number of ladies attended. Some very good scoring was done and matches fired off for a large number of prizes. Rifleman Win. Oliver succeeded in carrying off first honours in the club, and thus wins the . much covetted Carson Cup. Full particulars of the day's shooting and prize-winners will be supplied in next issue. Saturday would appear to be an unlucky day on our local railway. On account of some defect the connection with Stirling had to be made by coach. This is the second occasion within a few weeks that the railway service has failed to connect.

Mr .Joseph Sargeant, who for some years had charge of the local post office, has been paying a visit to this town, and met with a hearty welcome from a very wide circle of old friends.

The school garden potato crop has, on account of the exceedingly dry and unfavourable weather, proved to be very disappointing. The crop this year averages only .'1.7 tons per acre, whereas last year the crop went over 11! tons. This year's results are simply on a par with those in the majority of tlie local gardens on the high ground. l'u connection with the liquor controversy which has lately been exercising the minds of members of the Employees' Benefit Society matters were threshed out still further at a special general meeting held on Saturday evening, when close upon 40 members attended. Finality has not yet been reached, as would appear from a notice of motion tabled asking that at the next general meeting the committee be asked to resign in a body. The voting on this was almost equal—l 7 for, 15 against. A question which is rather difficult to answer has been going the round lately —viz., "Is it legal without a permit to give cash door prizes at an entertainment with a view to increasing the attendance?"
