£500,000 CASE AT AN END.

Hie £500,000 lawsuit, the most protracted and expensive Chancery action on record, has been settled. The dispute concerned a £1,000,(XX) contract undertaken by Messrs John Aird and Co., for the construction of a wet dock at Singapore for the Tanjong Pagar Dock Board. Messrs Aird claimed £500,000 damages for alleged misrepresentation with respect to the nature of the strata through which the trendies had to be sunk in order to build the walls of the dock.

After a trial occupying 42 days and costing, it is estimated, £7 a minute, Mr Justice Parker on December 20 held that there had been a blunder through carelessness but no dishonest intention or desire to deceive, and he reserved judgment on the other points. Later the record was withdrawn and the case settled on terms.
