KAITANGATA NEWS.

I" (Jr6 m Our Own Correspondent.) 7: BAND ROTUNDA BAZAAR. ifhe response to the call f orthe assiatof the ladies in connection with the lling of a bazaar for the purpose of ( funds to erect a band rotunda in ; ictoria Park was very encouraging in- , The attendance at the meeting 'ladies held in the Council Chambers s t Thursday evening again substanti- , e ,| the oft-repeated statement that the . (1 i eg of Kaitangata can always be re,,l upon to come forward and carry to ; sU ,.(cssful issue any scheme brought jwanl that is to be beneficial to the VD . After the Mayor had explained those present the object for which e meeting had been called, the ladies •gightway got to work and appointed e ; r committee, which is as under: — , tsident, Mrs W. D. Carson; secretary ( ,[ treasurer, Mrs F» Carson; commit- i Mrs D. Middlemass, Mrs Rollinson, ; rs John Pennell, Mrs Griffen, Mrs owe, Misses Hislop, Pennell, Rarity i d Gribben, with power to add to their ; mher. Assurance of assistance was •eived from a number of ladies' who re unable'to attend the meeting. The omittee do not intend to let the grass jw under their feet, as a meeting was | ain held last evening to go into dels and appoint canvassers, etc; The i of the Council Chambers in which hold their meetings was offered and s been accepted. The dates upon tich the bazaar will be held will be ed in the course of a few days.

SCHOOL MATTERS. The school committee meets this evening when, along with the usual routine business, applications for the position of second assistant in the school will be considered. Applications have been sent in by ten teachers. Miss Isabel McDougall has been appointed to the position of fourth assistant, a promotion which her work in the school 'justly entitled her to. Mr Win. Nicholas has been appointed pupil teacher, and Hiss Rhoda Blackie becomes a probationer in the school. By the resignation of several holders of scholarships under the Civil Service examinations Mr Ralph Latimer obtains a scholarship. The last named three received their primary education in the Kaitangata school.

KAITANGATA HOSPITAL. Several members of the Dunedin Hospital and Charitable Aid Board are likely to be in Kaitangata in the near future. This board's administration, or maladministration, of affairs in connection with matters pertaining to our local hospital has gained for itself nothing but ridicule from the Kaitangata public, and at present anything in the way of an appeal for funds for hospital upkeep is at once turned down. Many reports, the majority of which are. detrimental to the welfare of the hospital, have gained currency, and until all matters are thoroughly explained by the board, and a business scheme evolved which will meet with public favour, little or no support toward the hospital funds will be forthcoming. There is no gainsaying the fact that the Kaitangata public wants its hospital here, yet that public seems fully determined that the government of it will not be placed wholly and solely in the hands of a body of men none of whom are residents of the town. There is, of course, a local committee in connection with the hospital, hut unfortunately their powers are practically "nil." - The public await a proper explanation of affairs. There may be foundation or there may not for the many rumours at present so often brought to our ears, but there is not the slightest doubt that under proper and reasonable management bv the board Kaitangata will support its hospital as it has never failed to support anything for the good and welfare of the town; but until Kaitangata is satisfied that 2ood government and justice to the people is assured and maintained by the board the hospital fund appeal is likely to meet with as much support as the power of its local committee—"nil."

GENERAL. Quite a number of men cavilled back their own places at the recent ballot for places in the mines. The new drive — •V '1 mine—takes 14 men, and soon it is to be hoped many more. The final meeting for the season of tlie committee of the Kaitangata Athletic (Jlub was held in the Bridge Hotel on Friday evening, when the balancesheet was presented and approved of. The dub's expenses have been very heavy this last year, yet the credit balance is higher this year than formerly, the amount now standing to the club's credit being £BO, or slightly more. The club's annual smoke concert takes place "i the Masonic Hall on Saturday evening at 8 o'clock. The club intends to establish a social fund for holding social evenings. The question of holding a sports meeting at Easter time in each ?ear was discussed, and will be brought forward at the smoke concert. There is 10 time to work up a sports meeting for Easter this vear.

The employees' picnic and sports committee held a meeting on Saturday evenMg, when the balance-sheet was presented and other matters discussed. After the business was transacted the members flubbed together and enjoyed a pleasant social at their own expense, i 1 v erv pleasant evening's enjoyment belug the result. As no time could be obtaino,j at the picnic to allot toys to those c 'ii!flren who were sick and'could not attei"l the picnic, these will be attended now by the secretary (Mr Thos. -""ldlcmass) and Mr J, C. Shore, The Kaitangata Pipe Band are artaagiag to hold a concert on March 15,
