CONICAL HILLS ROADING.

COUNTY ENGINEER TO SUPERVISE WORK, I At Friday's meeting of the Clutha County Council a Tetter was read from ; | i ; W. F. Marsh, Commissioner of Crowq Lands, re Conical Hills Settlement, expressing regret that the council could not see its, way tp undertake the roading of the Settlement and asked if the discussion could be re-consid-ered one more favourable to the Department's views substituted. Wher■ver money had been recently spent on acquired settlements, the local authorities save in the present case have boon willing and anxious to carry out the works at the Department's, costs, and the results have been in every case satisfactory to all parties. There was no suggestion that the Governnent is to presume upon the good na.ure of the council, and extra costs of engineering and supervision would bo included in the amount required for the various roads specified. ■Mr Mitchell thought the Council should cany out the work. It was a new settlement and the council should help it.

The Chairman said it was clear now the Department was to pay the cost of engineering. Mr dimming had no objection provided some of the work was done by day labour which might be better t'h a n contract in the case of culverts.

Mr Clarke said they had previously decided that council could not spare time to parry out this wop 1 ;, as it would mean the neglect of the engineer's other work.

Mr dimming : W'o cun employ other engineering assistance and supervision. Mr Smith would object if it meant taking the engineer away from his ordinary work. There was plenty of work for him in Catlins..Mr Mitchell: What work have you got in Catlins ?—(Laughter). Decided to rescind the previous flccis.io», or the motion of Mr Gumming, seconded by Mr Mitchell, and to accept the expenditure, Engineer to cmploy assistance in engineering and supervision.
