A hairdresser who shot himself at Whangaroi in conversation with a friend recently said that ho had owing to him tho sum of £6O, being.debts incurred for hairdressing and shaving by numerous patrons of his saloon. This illustrates the extent to which the credit system is carried on in Whanga rod. At deceased's tariff of sixpence for haircutting or shaving £6O represents 2400 unpaid-for hair-cuts or shaves. A good story is told of a "new chum" from tho Old Country who recently aiv rived in the Manawatu district. He was told to milk a cow. But he had his own peculiar idea of milking, and the cow was not used- to it. A"self-respect-ing cow prefers to be milked from the side. The new chum in question approached the cow from behind and essayed to milk her through her bind legs. It was a very rueful young man that picked Wmself up a few secoada later.
