KAIHIKU.

LFkom Our Own Correspondent.! (Unavoidably held over from last issue.) A concert which has been looked forward to with much interest come off on Friday evening. The concert was got up in aid of the funds of the local cricket club. The weather during the week had been of a very mixed description, Friday morning and forenoon being wet and stormy. Towards evening the weather was sufficiently five to tempt a large audience to the school, where the concert was held. Had the weather cleared up earlier in ihe day no doubt the school would have been packed to the door. Mr W. Nicol, sen., president of the club, presided, and briefly explained the object for which the concert had been got up. As they had a long programme lo get through, he hoped the audience would defer all encores till the second part of the programme, seeing a dance was to follow the concert, which announcement was received wifch applause. However, the audience would not be denied encores for 1 some of the items on the programme. The concert was without a doubt one of the best which has been giveu in the Kaihiku district. It would be invidious to particularise the various performers, but the following ladies and gentlemen contributed to the evening's enjoyment : — Miss Garden, Miss M'Neil, Miss Clark, Miss Lawson, Miss Beid, Miss Paterson, the Misses Ayson, and Miss Sim. and Messrs Watt, 11. Ayson, A. Johnston, G. Sheddan, and J. Brown. The long and varied programme was got through in fairly good time, and from start to finish one and all seemed to thoroughly enjoy themselves. It is to be hoped the members of the club will make ifc a point to have a concert annually, as these social gatherings tend in a great measure to cement friendship by bringing both old and young together. At the close the following votes of thanks were passed. By Mr Espie, the captain of the club, to the performers ; Mrß. Johnston, to Mr John Johnston, for kindly placing his piano at the disposal of the committee ; Mr P. Watt, to the ladies who had so liberally provided tho refreshments, as evidencing the great interest taken by the ladies in the cricket club. The viands were of a choice and varied description, and abundantly proj vided. I am sure should the spinsters ever [ decide to get up an entertainment of their ■ own they would secure the hearty assistance iof the members of the cricket club. Mr M. j Paterson also proposed a hearty vote of 1 thanks to the chairman. Mr Nicol suitably replied. The schoolroom was then cleared for dancing, which was kept, up right heartily till an early hour, old and young seeming to thoroughly enjoy themselves. The school room presented quite a gay appearancs, being nicely decorated for the occasion with flowers and evergreens. The members of the cricket club had a good practice game last Saturday. As the club has some important fixtures it is to be fnped members will avail themselves of as much practice as possible. Fielding practice ! must be attended to. As the weather far a good many weeks has been agaiusfc* all outdoor sports it is to bs hoped members will roll up in large numbers on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays for practice. A first class pitch is being laid down iv Mr P. Watt's large paddock, kindly placed at the disposal of the. club. As Mr Watt has done tho greater part of the work so far it is to be hoped all members will lend a willing hand from time to time so as to get the pitch finished with as little delay as possible.
