STIRLING.

[From Our Own Correspondent.] " With floods and flames surrounded We still our way pursue." Since my last report we have had both floods and flames. Eegarding the latter, I am sorry to have to report that Mr Shillinglaw's house, occupied by Mr W. Davie has been burned to the ground. The building was insured but Mr Davie's furniture was uninsured, and only a very few articles of furniture were saved. Mr Davie is a working man and will feel his loss greatly. He has the sympathy of the people here iv his misfortune. Eegarding the floods considerable excitement was occasioned here on Sunday night and on Monday by the very high and threatening aspect of the river. Most of tlie men were out all night on Sunday night banking the water back aud in this way did good service. On Monday we had a narrow escape from a disaster. While two settlers were inspecting the flood bank they noticed the water breaking through at a rabbit hole. All available hands wore soon on the spot and it took the combined efforts of some fifteen or twenty men to cope with the force of the rush of water and stop it. Had the leak not been noticed for a few minutes longer several feet of water would have swept through Stirling, no doubt doing a large amount of damage. The river continued very high on Tuesday, causing great anxiety. On Friday night we had a magic lantern entertainment in the school room. It was given by Mr H. Hull, the subject being a trip round the world. A good number were present and all seemed to enjoy themselves. The proceeds were in aid of the local corps of the Salvation Army.
