TUESDAY, JULY 10. In the Legislative Council — The Joint Plohse Committee reported that they recommended liquor should be sold in Bellamy's for this session only, and that the control of such sales be left in the hands of the House Committee. A bill to amend the law concerning illegitimate children (Hon. Mr Macgregor), so as to enable them to be legitimised after the marriage of the parents, was read a first time. In the Hpuse of Representatives — Replying to questions Ministers said steps had already been taken by the Agiicultural department in the direction of preventing the ravages of the white grub, but so far they had been unsuccessful. The matter would still be pushed forward.— lnvestigation was being made as to the best cure or prevention of parasitic diseases of sheep. — The question of the abolition of the duty on sheep shears would be referred to the Tariff Committee.- — ■ The Government were advised there was no necessity for shareholders of tho Bank of New Zealand passing a resolution instructing the directors of the bank to petition Parliament during the present session for leave to introduce a private act confirming the several provisions affecting the shareholders. — Special instructions had been set to forest rangers to use their utmost endeavours to preserve forest reserves from destruction by fire. Hon. Mr Seddon moved that Mr Guinness be appointed Chairman of. Committees. — Hon. E. Mitchelson, while not opposing the appointment, said that his side of the House had last session more than once to complain that Mr Guinness's rulings in the chair had not been of an impartial character, and he hoped that would not occur again. — Motion earried. Mr Guinness, in thanking the House for the honor conferred on him, asserted that in the prist he had endeavoured to be strictly impartial in his rulings. Hon. J. M'Kenzie moved — ""That the whole transactions in connection with the purchase of the Pomahaka block under " The Laud for Settlement Act 1892 » he referred to the Waste Lands Committee for investagation with power to take evidence on it and call for persons, and to report to the House." — After some discussion the motion was agreed to. Mr G. Hutchison (Waitotara) moved — " That the House agree with the report of the Joint House Committee to the effect that the sale of liquors be allowed in Bellamy's for the present session only." Hon. Mr Seddon supported the motion which was strongly opposed by Sir R. Stout, Hon. E. Mitchelson and others. The motion was ultimately carried by 34 to 23. On resuming at 7.30 the House went into Committee to consider the proposed new Standing Orders and progress was reported at 12.15 a.m. when the House rose.
