FOOTBALL NOTES.

+ I (By Red-and-White.)

KAITANGaTA v. OWAKA. The Owaka first fifteen visited Kaitangata to play the return match on Saturday last. The morning was very wet and cold but cleared after noon, the sun coming out strong. The teams were : —- Kaitangata.—Backs—Fraser, Paget, Thomson, J. C. M'Donald, P. Median, Holt. Forwards—Duncan ('2), A. Thomson, Welsh, lleid, Dundas, Jarvie, Dixon, and Meechan. Owaka.—Backs—P. Latta, A. Wingfield, T. Parker, Wright, B. Wingfield, Gow. Forwards—M'Phie, Paterson, White, Carlton, Johnsion, James, Fraser, Wilson, Gosden. ■ . Owaka kicked off against the wind and Eeid for Kaitangata by good following up pressed Owaka close. Carrying the first scrum with them, however, the' visiting forwards cleared the line in good syle and a free kick enabled them to send the ball to the Kaitangata full back. Fraser, however, saved well with a good long kick and again play centered in Owaka's twenty-five and had it not been for A. Wingfield's grand defensive play and kicking the home team must have got over. Gow at ,'last got his line cleared but J. M'Donald ran well up, being only stopped by Latta. By superior play on line out Owaka again cleared but a mark by Holt placed by Dr Thomson forced them. From the kick out Owaka came away with a.good passing rush and Thomson returned, puntiug into touch well up the field. Half-time was called with play in Owaka's ground. Kaitangata having the wind against them kicked ofi and at once put their opponents on the defensive, scrums on the Owaka line being the order of play. The Owaka men were too good in defence and at length Gow got away with a dribling rush which finally resulted in Kaitangata being forced. From a loose scrum Jarvie sent the leather on to Thompson and a quick pass to McDonald saw the latter run up to the Owaka full back punting over the line and following .up.; the ball, however, rolled into touch-in-gbalr ■ Play was again centered, and from a mark B. Wingfield tried a place, Kaitangata being forced. Nothing further of interest happened till call of time, the ball heing in neutral territory, and the equally contested game ended in a draw, neither side having scored. For Owaka the Wingfield brothers were splendid in defence ; Gow also was good but makes a better forward. James and White were very good in the forward ranks but the whole team played well and worked hard. Kaitangata had a really good three-quarter in Jack M'Donald (lately of Milton) and Dr Thomson, though evidently a little off in the first spell played a good attacking game in the second. Meehan should have been forward and Holt was not in his place at half. Fraser played well at full back and has improved very much since the start of the season. The pick of a good lot of forwards were the two Duncans, Alex. Reid, Welsh and A. Thomson.

The Clinton team visit Balclutha to play the local first fifteen to-morrow. Play commences at 3.45 sharp. The Clutha team will be :—Backs—J. Finn, P. S. Bett, F. Tyson, P. Mason, W. Finn, W. S.
