OWAKA.

— . [from our own correspondent.] It is surely time the Recreation Ground Committee took some steps towards getting the ground into, order for next season, if they intend using it for cricket and the Caledonian sports. I believe it is the intention to raise a loan on it, pay off the balance owing on the land, and spend what is over on improvements—viz., fencing, sowing down, etc., and as Arbor Day is drawing near it would be a godd chance to get it planted with trees. The Football Club are holding a concert and dance on 13th July in Paterson's Hall, in aid of their funds, and a good programme is Jeing arranged. The Batanui Minstrels .will perform, so it is to be hoped they will have a fine night. Mr Macandrew and Inspector Kirker were surveying along the line the other day as far as the station site. I hear it is the intention to start the next gang of men on the swamp. The Owaka Footballers returned from Kaitangata on Saturday night and had a rough drive home, but had had a good time while away and seem contented with their draw. Mr W. Mason's son, who hurt himself last week, seems to be getting along nicely, although it must be soins time before he can be about again. The roads have kept up wonderfully well J this season, excepting the lake road, which as usual at this time of the year is a regular swamp to travel through. June 26, 1893.
