RONGAHERE.

«. [Fiiom Our Own Corkespondhnt.] The weather here lately h;is been very wintry, and consequently the roads a.re very sloppy. Whooping cough has visited this locality of late, nearly every family being afflicted, and in the case of grown-up persons it seems to be very troublesome. Miss Annie Arnott, daughter of Mr Geo. Arnott, has been dangerously ill, but I am happy to say she is recovering again. Since last year great changes have taken place around Jtongahere. I will describe each farm separately later on, and will now only refer to the outlying portion of Clydevale in close proximity to Rongahere. Twelve months ago this portion of Ciydevale, comprising between 400 and 500 acres, was almost a wilderness. Tenders were called for clearing, and ultimately the contract was taken by a party of Chinese at a price much lower than Europeans could do the work. About 20 of them commenced, and after a long tedious job finished it. At the present time a number of contractors are busy breaking up this land. It has greatly altered the appearance of this locality. In my last, which by-the-way never appeared, I gave an account of the atrocious crime of cutting the head line of the float at the Ranklebnrn punt. Had the punt man, Mr W. G. Buchan, not noticed it before a team came on a terrible accident would have occurred. However, the county council have sent out wire ropes to replace the hemp one, and when this is fixed up it will be much safer. This district is again on the list for a largtj sum for road making. The road on the east side of the river from the punt down to Tuapeka Mouth is to bo gone on with at once. This will effectively settle the question of a punt, at Tuapeka Mouth. Also the road from Mr Arnott's gate out to Mr J. Sharp's is to be cleared and formed immediately. The road from Messrs Tyson and Dunlop's sawmill to the Beaumont is to be made as far as funds will allow. All this work must benefit the district considerably, independent of the benefit of outlet. Rongahere, June 11.
