KAITANGATA.

[From Our Own Correspondent.! I hear that Mr Peter Boyd, who got his leg broken last week is progressing satisfactorily. The circumstances of this accident call to mind the necessity for a hospital in Kaitangata. Strong comment has lately taken place among some of the townspeople, but the Borough Council is as yet silent in regard to it. The feeling is, however, growing apace in favor of some institution of the kind, and I venture to say that it will not belong till some practical move is made. " From the very nature of the occupation of. its workers, Kaitangata is prone to accident," says one commentator, and this is true to the letter. A coal-mining town such as this should not be without a public institution where serious cases might be treated without necessitating removal to Dunedin. A popular concert (Masonic) was held last Saturday night when the attendance was fairly large. The programme was attractive and some good music was rendered. The following are the items and performers : — MissM. Corson, piano solo ; Mr M'Yie, song ; Miss Penman, song ; Mr Nott, comic song ; Miss McGeorge, song ; Miss J. Corson, song ; Mr Algie, humorous reading ; Misses Shore, Piano Duet ; Mr G. Aitcheson, song ; Mr Nott, selection on the whistle ; Miss Mackie, song ; Messrs Aitcheson and Nicholson,' vocal duet ; Miss Kirby, song ; Miss Penman, song ; Mr McGeorge, song ; National Anthem. The School Committee met on Friday evening, when there were present — Dr Fitzgerald (chairman), Messrs Hunter, Hislop, Morrison, Carruthers, Blackie, Eaynes, and Eamsay. The headmaster reported— No. on roll, 240 boys, 184 girls, total 424 ; average attendance, boys 191, girls 148; total 339;-— The report \ was adopted,— A large number- of defaulters! were reported anfl M, Carrutheyg move^l

" That application be made to the Minister of Defence, through the Education Board, to have the local police officer appointed as truant officer :" seconded by Mr Morrison and carried. — Mr Carruthers also moved — " That . statutory notice be at once served on all the defaulters :" seconded by Mr Eaynes and carried.— A letter was received from the secretary of the Education Board, stating that the asphalting at the schooi would require to be top dressed before the architect would pass it. — The following accounts were passed for payment: Mrs Hewitt L4 10s, D. Beid L3 3s, John Nicholson L2, and A. Bradley 11s.— Dr Fitzgerald intimated that he intended to provide.a circular swing for the school, and asked permission, to erect it on the ground. This was granted and a vote of thanks to Dr Fitzgerald for his kind liberality was carried. — The net amount available from last week's concert was L9. A Blue Eibbon entertainment was held on Thursday evening and turned out a thorough success. Miss Frazer, of Lakeside, was presented with a very neat work-box, handsomely inscribed, as a recognition, of her services in the cause. The Eev -Mr Tairmaid made the presentation on behalf of the society. The weather is very cold and cloudy and heavy rain appears imminent.
