BEST-MANAGED FARM COMPETITIONS.

The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on Saturday, when a letter was read, from Mr Thomas Brydone, giving his decision on the farms competing for Sir John Bennet Lawes's challenge shield. The prize for the best-managed farm between 400 and 1000 acres was awarded to Messrs John Reid and Son, Monte Cristo, Southland, and for the farm under 400 acres to Mr Walter Blackie, Glasgow Farm, East Taieri. Mr Brydone explains that he judged the various farms by points under the following headings : — (l\ Cleanness of farm generally, (2) condition of English grass, (3) grain, (4) root crops, (5) buildings, (G) fences, (7) gates, (8) farm implements, (9) stock — generally two kinds, (10) manuring, (11) utilising ■waste products, (12) reclamation, (13) drains and ditches, (14) garden. And he is sorry that there are not more prizes, as some who are left out are well worthy of notice. The schedule giving full particulars of the number of points gained under the different headings is at the secretary's office, and can be seen by all competitors on application. The secretary was instructed to have the successful competitors' names engraved on the shield, and also to obtain two. gold medals to be retained by the winners, and to make arrangements to have these publicly presented at the Garrison Hall on the first day of the winter show.
