KAITANGATA.
[From Our Own Correspondent.] The concert held here last Thursday night was very well patronised. F-fis Worship the Mayor took the chair at about a quarter to 8 and opened the proceedings in a few appropiate remarks. The string band, consisting of Messrs Urquhart (violincello), M'Vie (cornet), M'Fad^en and Novis (violins), began the entertainment by playing "Jacobite Airs." A good programe was gone through, both the vocal and instrumental music being loudly applauded and often encored. At the close of the concert the Mayor pointed out the great necessity for parents to keep their children at school and thereby to keep up the average attendance required. The reason for the present concert was that the average attendance ; at school had not been up to the required ; number. A hearty vote of thanks to the ' Chair closed the entertainment. ! The Castle Hill Coal Company are pushing operations with vigour and a good number of additional men have been taken on lately. The coal now being obtained must be of a very satisfactory quality as I have been told in Dunedin and in one or two southern towns, that, the sample . trucks my informants had. tried were better than any they have used hitherto. A benefit society is in ''course of formation amongst the workmen of this mine and promises to come to a successful issue. An ambulance society is T hear, also to be started, which I have no doubt will do great good. Mr Jordan, the energetic ( manager of the mine will provide an I ambulance outfit for use on class-nights. The Hugo Minstrels visited the town ! last Tuesday night and drew a good house. A serions accident occurred on Tuesday to Mr Boyd, butcher, of Stirling. While driving his cart down hill it appears the breeching broke and afterwards the backband, and Mr Boyd was thrown down between the horse and cart, the horse kicking out fiercely struck Mr Boyd so heavily on the leg as to cause a compound fracture. Great sympathy is felt for the sufferer, who, however, is progressing favourably. The demand for houses to rent still continues, and every place in the town is taken up. A new draper has started business in the shop lately occupied by Mr Nieman, watchmaker. Mr Whitney has also started business in Mr Stewart's chambers as a land and estate agent, An ambulance class is held every Monday night by Df Thomson and a large number have ..taken advantage of this opportunity, of obtaining instruction |jn this most important matter,
The cemetery committee held a meeting fo-night, when a resolution was passed that the cemetery, reserve be cut up into sections and advertised for sale at an ear y date.
