CATLINS RIVER RAILWAY.

The following correspondence which has passed between the Premier and Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.8., regarding the above work has been. handed to us for publication : — [Telegrams.] Mr Thos, Mackenzie, M.H.R., Balclutha. Just received your telegram conveying agreeable information re Catlins Eiver railway. Please accept my thanks and the thanks of the settlers in Catling for your kind attention to this most important work. Eequisition posted which was passed at public meeting at Owaka regarding the railway, but you have by your attention to previous communications anticipated the requisitionists' desires. Mr Mackenzie wired to the Premier'requesting that residents in Catlins should have employment on the railway works about to go on, and the following 18 the Premier's reply :— Mr Thos. Mackenzie, M.H.E., Balclutha. Re work for local men on railway. Matter under consideration. Catlins men being good bushmen it was thought they would be better at that work, whilst men from town more suitable for railway. As two homes have to be kept up in any .case it cannot matter much. There may be exceptions, and if so attention will be given to them, but I must leave these matters of detail to our Government officers. E. J. Seddon. . Kumara, May 14.
