BALCLUTHA LITERARY SOCIETY.
«. The opening meeting, of the above society was held in M'Kenzie's Hall on evening last, when the President, Dr Kerning, delivered an ambulange lecture. There was a a crowded house. The subjects dealt with were stopping bleeding, rescuing trie apparently drowned, and the various application of ambulance bandage. The situation of the main blood-vessels and how to control them, and the method of artificial respiration, etc., were all shown on one of the audience, who acted as patient. The second meeting of the society took place on Wednesday evening last, and consisted of a musical evening. There was again a good attendance, and everything passed off very pleasantly, almost every item being encored. Songs were contributed by Misses Corson (who sang a duet and a solo), Miss Kerr, and Messrs Ferrar, Bray, O. Bishop, and Pennycook ; violin solos by Misses Stewart and Lawson:.and piano solo by Mr Vanpioni. 'Miss Smith acted as accompanist. The next meeting is on Wednesday evening, when Mr Joseph will give a paper on "New Zealand under ice. .
