KAITANGATA.

-♦ [From Oor Own Cokresfondekt.l In compiling this week's budget I feel that, owing to my two previous ones not having appeared within the columns of the Leader, their expected destination, my labour will be in vain Notwithstanding the fact, that each of my letters were posted on the Wednesday evening, it was Friday before the first reached its destination, lhave now determined to try another mode of conveyance pending improvements being made upon the other. We are still on the boom. During the past month four new places of business have been opened and contracts entered into for the erection of another two in Water street, one in Eddystone Street, and a ten-roomed temperance boardinghouse at the north end of the town. It is to be hoped that competition will not be too strong and result in "Coalopolis" becoming a miniature Melbourne. The annual meeting of householders was held in the schcolhouse on Monday evening. There was a very small attendance. Mr A. Carruthers, chairman of outgoing committee, presided. The report and balance-sheet was read and showed a debit balance of of Ll2. The following gentlemen were then elected as a coa.mittee : — A. Blackie, A. Camuhers, Dr Fitzgerald, W. Ramsay, N. Norris, G. Raynes, D. Morrison. J. Hunter, and J. Hislop. The chairman intimated that a meeting for the election of chairman and clerk would be held in the Athenaeum on Friday evening. Mr W. H. Mackenzie has convened a public meeting to be held in M'Govern's Hall on Monday evening when he will deliver a short address upon " The River and its relation to trade." The meeting is under the auspices of the mayor and and councillors, and the mayor will preside. I understand the services of a shorthand reporter has been procured, and every effort will be made to have full publicity given to the proceedings of this meeting. Ratepayers and residents will no doubt attend en masse, and as a special invite has been extended to the ladies there should be a good representation of females. On Saturday evening Messrs W. H. Mackenzie & Co. held a sale of township j allotments. "There was a very good I attendance, and in many instances the bidding was spirited. The wholfi of the sections submitted were disposed of at prices ranging from L 23 to L 75 per j quarter acre. Business sites were most in demand, and representatives of a Dunedin firm and a Balclutha one were amongst the purchasers. Our local brethren of the mystic tie have decided to start Saturday evening concerts. The preceeds are to be devoted towards the reduction of the liabilities attached to their new hall. It has also been determined to have the concerts in their own hall. It is to be regretted that the Athenseum Committee did (not undertake the inauguration of these Saturday entertainments, as their demands upon public patronage would have been more liberally responded to than those of a secret society. A draught club has been formed, and every evening enthusiasts are to be seen in eager conflict. The predicted visit of Mr Brodie, champion, is no doubt the cause of the increased interest, which is being manifested in this game. The match president v. vice-president takes place on Saturday.
