PUREKIREKI.

[FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] Threshing is nearly finished in this district, and we have had anything but favourable weather for It, as wind, rain, snow, and hail have been prominent since the mill came in. The returns are hardly up to former years, but the sample as far as I have seen is good. The crops were all well got in, which was a good thing for the farmer. A meeting of farmers was held in the school here on Saturday night to consider the advisability of starting a dairy factory. It was not very well attended, but those present had a discussion on the subject, and a committee of three was appointed to go round the district to ascertain what support ! the factory would get. It was also proposed to \have the factory a butter factory, and to have it on the co-operative principle, the supplyers qi milk to be the shareholders, the shares to Be LI each. I have no doubt that if the factory can be started it will be a great boon ,for the farmers here, and if carried out on /the co-operative principle it would be sure to succeed. There is to be a meeting at the school on Saturday, May 5, at 7.30 p.m., to hear the report of those appointed to canvas the district and to obtain other information. We have got another teacher here, Mr Findlay by name. He is from the Arthur Street School, and is a married man. He is a very good man and a good teacher, and the committee are to be congratulated on their choice. There was no election on Monday night, it being so stormy and the settlers have all a long way to go to the school. The Chairman decided to postpone the election. April 24, 1894.
