OWAKA.

[fuom our own correspondent. I Mr Tulloch and his threshing mill has got pretty well advanced, being up at T. Knowles yesterday, and every where he has been has given great satisfaction. The amount of dust j in the crops this season is very bad ; after aj day's work they look more like niggers than/ white men, The Owaka Dairy Factory had to call a meeting of creditors last Thursday, but as the estate is expected to realize 17s 6d in the £ it will not be severely felt. Mr W, Brown was elected trustee to wind up the estate etc. The factory will go on as usual, Mr Brown having taken it over from the 19th inst., and it will now run in his name. The football match Owaka v. Batanui came off last Saturday, but as some of the most prominent~members on both sides were away the game lost much of its general interest. After a tight and even game Owaka won by six points to five. Tries for Owaka were gained by A. Lees, Johnston, and Fraser, and that for Katanui by White, which Gow converted. Next Saturday all membess are requested to turn up to practice, as the committee meet on Mouda^ evening at 7 30 p.na. to choose a team to go to Caversham. The new colours which are sanctioned by the Bugby Union are light blue and red stripes, so any member requiring them kindly notify the secretary at once. The idea has been mooted of holding a quadrille assembly on Saturday evenings from Bto 10 in Paterson's Hall. The first, I believe is to be held on Saturday week. We certainly want something to liven us up a bit, so it is to be hoped it will be carried through. We are still having rough boisterous weather, and there seems to be no chance of its blowing over. A full meeting of the Vigilance Committee was held on Wednesday evening, Mr J. Craig (president) in the chair. Mr George Ford (honorary secretary) having explained the object of the meeting, the following resolutions were carried unanimously ; — Proposed by Mr Saundevs, seconded by Mr Ford — " That as eight months have now elapsed since Parliament met and only a small amount of the money voted has been spent on the Catlins railway, and that more in the shape of charitable aid than to the prosecution of an important public work, this meeting having almost lost faith in the promises given by you while in Owaka in 1892, have now to ask if it js your intention to push on the construction and complete the Catlins railway to Owaka before the close of the present financial year." Proposed by Mr Dabinett, seconded by Mr Logan — " That having ascertained that the sum of LIOO going to the credit of Hunt's road is still unexpended we respectfully request that the money be spent on the road to make it passable to the Katea school." Proposed by Mr Saunders, seconded by Mr Campbell — " That this meeting beg to bring under your notice the unsatisfactory progress which has been made since Parliament met with the Cannibal Bay road. Although money was voted for the purpose the road has not been touched, and the money already spent will soon be lost through the young vegetation springing up, while the settlers in that block are seriously considering the necessity of surrendering their holdings on account of not being able to get provisious and fencing material on the land." The following resolution was also passed — " That these resolutions be forwarded to Mr T. Mackenzie, M.H.E., for presentation to the Ministers of Public Works and Lands respectfully.
