The Elections.

We [append corrected detailecf particulars of the voting at the various centres throughout the Clutha in connection with the licensing elections and local option poll on the 21st inst. The total number of names on the roll is 3315. In order that the poll should be legal it was necessary that half this number should vote, or 16572-, or say 1658, for there are no such things as halves in cases of this kind. The total number of votes polled as per ballot papers is 2490, from which must be deducted 197 informal papers, leaving 2293 as the actual number of votes recorded. This number, 2293, is the basis on which the result of the local option poll must be calculated. In order to carry no license three-fifths of that number, or 1375, must vote accordingly in respect of each of the three proposals — viz., publicans', accommodation, and bottle license, for, notwithstanding the seeming contradiction in section 15 of ths Liquors Act, Mr Grigor — the ieturning officer — backed up by legal advice, has held that the three proposals must be counted independently of each other — each a clear and separate vote, according to the explanation in the schedule or voting paper. So far as the poll in this district is concerned, however, it is understood that Avere the ballot papers dealt with according to the strict reading of the section already mentioned, and all papers rejected which were informal on any of the three proposals ifc would not effect tho result ; the effect would be to reduce the actual number of votes recorded, but not by so much as would render the poll void, and to increase the threefifths margin. On reference to the results it will be seen that 1642 votes were recorded against publicans' licenses, leaving a margin of 267 over and above the required three fifths. In regard to accommodation .licenses • there was a similar marijin of 308, and • in bottle licenses of 533. Out of the ' 2490 persons who voted 101.3 were I women and 1465 men, leaving a dis i crepancy of 12 which the deputy re turning officers either omitted to ticli off the roll as jshey handed out tht papers or marked off the wrong names the result being that in one or twe cases the same names were ticked of as having voted at two different booths •j It is not presumed that these wen J cases of double voting. The questioi

has been raised as to whether if the publican party had abstained from voting the poll would have been void. Deducting' both the votes recorded for licenses remaining as at present and those in favor of reduction — in all 577 — from tin* actual number of votes recorded, 2293, foavps 1716, or 58 more than thtr half. The organisation, and probably the strength, of the two parties may 1 it* fairly guaged in the voting for the two sets of candidates, the highest moderate being 1084 behind the lowest temperance. And it was genprnlly reckoned, at this end of tho district at any ratf», that the moderates were .personally the strongest team. ELECTION OF COMMITTEE. Tempebanoe Candidates.
