BRUCE COUNTY COUNCIL.

The above council met at Milton on Tuesday last. There were present — Messrs H. Clark (chairman), Macpherson, Calder, Noble, Crane, Murray, Haggart, and Mosley.

Tho Minister of Mines wrote that the council's claim for damage done to the county roads by the dredging operations on the Waipori river were being enquired into by an officer appointed to investigate the claims sent in for compensation since the issue of the notice that an application had been made to the Governor to have Waipori river proclaimed a water cource under "The Mining Act 1891."— Read. The Taieri County Council wrote with reference to the maintenance of the present at Taieri Mouth. It appeared that the chairmen of the two councils had conferred on the subject and the Taieri council now intimated tbat they agreed to the decision of the chairmen and would contribute one-third cost of maintaining the punt and approaches.— The arrangement was agreed to by the council, and the inspector was directed to confer with the Taieri county inspector as to works necessary in connection with the approaches. Mr H. L. Johnston again wrote with reference to the widening of Graham's bridge. — Received,

Mr G. H. Gilroy wrote explaining that the compensation he wanted for^ the ditch passing through his land was that a fence be erected on one side, and three crossings made over the ditch. —Read. Mr James Morrison wrote that if the other ratepayers made no claim for the ditch passing through their lands he would make no claim. — Rend.

Mrs J. Bryce wrote that she did not want cempensation for thie ditch passing through her land, but she wished a fence put up alongside of same and a crossing for stock. — Read.

Mr William Smith wrote with reference to the purchase of closed roads through his property. — Matter to stand over till plans prepared and the correct area ascertained.

The Mount Stuart Road Board asked the council to pay half cost of gravelling part of the boundary road through Meadowbank property. — Declined. MISCELLANEOUS. The Chairman was authorised to take steps to open up the new road through Horseshoe Bush estate. * 2?o tenders were received for contract No. 381, widening ditch on Inch Clutha ; nor for Nos. 382, 383, 384, 385, 386, and 387 for ditches in connection with the Matau drainage scheme. It was agreed to call fresh tenders.

It was agreed, on the motion of Mr Calder, seconded hy Mr Haggart, that in the event of the poll of the ratepayers in Lakes drainage district heing favourable to the raising of the loan, that tenders be called for the works, and a committee was appointed to deal with them. i

The inspector's report on roads and works was read and adopted. With reference to the clause referring to the Matau drainage scheme the following resolution was passed — "That the council is of opinion that the route suggested by the inspector should be adopted, but, understanding that those interested prefer the present route, the council only a-irees to it under protest, leaving the responsibility entirely on the ratepayers." The special order levying a special rate of one-sixteenth of a penny in the £ over the Lakes drainage district, to repay a loan of LSOO for cutting a canal through Kaitangata Lake, widening Morrison's Creek, and cutting a canal into Tuakitoto Lake, was confirmed by the council.

The council adjourned till the first Tuesday in May.
