MATAU ROAD BOARD.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the Mat; ui Road Board was held, in the sehoolhouso, Stirling, on Saturday evening. There were present — Messrs Inglis .(chairman), Petrie, Nelson, Aitchison, and Smith.

The minutes of the previous meeting were road av>&, confirmed.

Th« Chairman stated that the contracts for formation on Blackie's and Hiil roads were finished and passed.

Specifications for formation, of road leading to Mr Lyons's was laid on the table and adopted, with addition to culvert in bod of gully to be laid with 12 inch pipes. — It was resolved that tenders for .tho work be received on Saturday first. . The Chairman, with Messrs Peti\e and Smith, to open same.

Mr Petrie reported that he, the Chairman, and Smith had made an inspection of the roads through Stirling. He reported that the ditches on the street loading to the Goods Shed, and on the side street leading to the Yards, required to be cleaned out, and recommended that clay be laid to fill up the low part of the street between the smithy and Houlston's Hotel, and that a few loads of rough metal be laid on the road in front of Honlston's Hotel. — It was resolved that the Clerk employ a man to carry out the work.

Mr Aitchison reported that he had made an inspection of the . river bank near Ivaitangata punt, and suggested that a groin be placed just above the punt to try and prevent the under scour about the punt jetty and piles. He stated that owing to the high state of the river at present, nothing could ba dona till the river is lower. — Report adopted.

Messrs .Arnold and Wright wrote informing the Board that they were obliged to surrender contracts for metalling on coal road, and also metalling on old manse road, stating they under-estimated the work to be done, and asking if the Board would consider thu amount of work they had completed, and i-efund deposit on contr.ic's.

After a discussion it wag moved by Mr Smith, and secondc&l by Mr Nelson — "That the deposit bo refunded." —

It was moved. by Mr Petric — ''That L2O be spent in screened gravel to repair the svvamn road near the ELalt&ugata punt."

Seconded by Mr Smith, rind a'^Pee 1 to ; the Clerk to prepare specification.* for same and forward them to Mr Aitohison.

The Clerk was instructed to call, fresh tenders for metal contracts on coal and old manse roads, tenders for same to be laid before the Board at a special meeting to be held on the 31st insfc.
