The minutes of previous meeting were read and eonurmed. CORRESPONDENCE. The following letters were read by the Clerk :— To his Worship the Mayor and Councillors. Gentlemen, —As you ate probably aware, cases liavo been tried in the itesidenb M.igisLrace's Court here, testing my right to collec' tolls iwice a day from the same individual passing through the toll with the same animals. By the decision of the Court 1 am not authorised to collect toll a second time. When I teudeved for the lease of the bridge toll I understood the charges and exemptions were those previously allowed by the former toll collector. 1 enclose letter received from .your solicitor, giving list of exemptions. I need hardly say that I ;un a considerable loser by the new rato, and I appeal to you to consider the case favourably, and to make such a reduction in the rent as may seem to you fair auil reasonable. —l am, &c, Duncan M'Farlane, Toll Collector. To his Worship the Mayor, Balclutha;

Sir,—l am directed to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of the 14th mst., in further reference to the question of the site to be chosen on which to erect the new post office and telegraph station at Balclutha, and, in reply, to inform you that the Postmaster-General has decided not to take any action in the matter forthe j present.—l am, &c, W. Ghat, Secretary. G.P.0., Wellington, Aug. 29, 1878. To his Worship the Mayor, Balclutha. Sir,—l have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of your telegram of the 23rd inst., and, in reply, am directed to forward for your Worship's information a New Zealand Gazette of this day's flate, containing an order under the hand of his Excellency the Governor in Council authorising rolls to be prepared for wards in the Borough of Balclutha.—l have, &c, G. S. Cooper. Colonial Secretary's Office, Wellington, Aug. 29, 1878. Moved by Mr Dunne, seconded by Mr Macdonald, and carried, " That the letters be received, but be left over for the present, to be dealt with by the new Council." Mr Macdonald said there was no doubt there was considerable hardship in Mr M'Farlane's case, and he (Mr Macdonald) thought the best thing he could do would be to throw the thing up. The matter was then allowed to drop. FINANCE. Accounts, as follows, were passed for payment :—Hobert Grigor, preparing rc-poi-t on water question (M'NeilV, ;v\.\ Tosh's property), LlO :10s,: John ]Vi ;•<■;- donald, fuse, powder, &0,, L 2 8s ud;; rope, etc., L 3 Gs 4d ; cemetery, 13s lOd. It was moved and seconded, " That the sum of two guineas each be allowed his Worship the Mayor and Mr Hogg as de^putation expenses for their visit to town last week." CLERICAL ASSISTANCE. Mr Dunne moved and Mr Macdonald seconded, " That the Clerk procure any assistance he may require in compiling fjo rolls, &c, at the Council's expense." Carried. CHARLOTXE-STRKET. Mr Mason said he had that day visited Charlotte-street, and some parts of it wore in a very bad state with water—in fact, quite disgraceful. He thought very little would make a great improvement. Ho would therefore move " That tho cUiyman be instructed to do what is necessary at once." Seconded by Mr Dunne, and carried. The meeting then adjourned.
