'■"■': rrryr. - ;//,/'' The minutes of previous meeting were read and confirmed. < i-v Ihe Clerk read a letter from' the Pro-; vmcial Secretary requesting to be informed as to what extent tbeCouneil would contribute towards the salary. -..0f a revenue officer it was proposed/ to appoint for the Province,, with a view to preventing "illicit traffic in spirituous liquors -also to inspect ' weights and .measure s,/ to enforce, the provisions/of- the Dangerous Goods Act, the .Adulteration of Food Act, and the Bakers' and Millers Act. . The letter was received. Tenders were opened for .cleaning the Cpunc.il . Chambers for 1 1 wel ve months, and that of Mrs Algie wai accepted. Several accounts were passed and ordered to be paid. - . A letter was read from the Town Clerk, in reply to an enquiry, stating there could be no doubt ratepayers were entitled to vote for Mayor in each ward in which they held property, and for which they had qualified. 7 - The Clerk laid /on the table a list of defaulting ratepayers. -.';..'• On; the motion; of Councillor Dunne; seconded by Councillor Hope, the Surveyor was instructed to prepare specifications for continuing the gravelling of footoath9 in Clyde-street, as far as the Wesleyan Chapel In reply to Councillor Sain the Clerk reported that on tbe 28th May, he had requested Mr Crarnmond to remove obstructions he had placed upon a street, but had received no reply. It was resolved that all obstructionists be summoned forthwith, and. that the Solicitor for the Corporation be employed to conduct the ca^es. In reply to Councillor Dunne the Clerk reported that he had requested tbe Government to remove the telegraph i.osts from off the footpaths, , but bad received no .reply. He was requested again to call their attention to the matter. The Clerk was instructed to request the owners of verandahs obstructing the footpaths to have them removed wthin f urteen days, otherwise legal proceedings would be adopted. - Tbe Surveyor was instructed to call for tenders for raising the street to the proper level opposite the new. Temperance Hotel the cost not to exceed L 10 .: It was directed that negotiations be opened with Mr Marr for the purchase of metal now lying beside the main road north of the bridge. : • . • The Mayor intimated that be had appointed Thursday, the 16th instant as the nomination for Mayor. Councillors and Auditors, the same to be held in Barr's Hall. The poll, if any, for Mayor to take place on Tuesday, the 21st. The following gentlemen were appointed Returning Officers at the forthcoming election?:— South Ward, Court House, J. M. Russell. North Ward. Council Chambers, J. S. Fleming.
