AUSTRALIA Offshore buying firms market

NZPA-AAP Sydney Offshore buying helped boost Australia’s sharemarket to a firmer close yesterday in quiet trading after the Christmas holiday break. The all-ordinaries index closed up at 1651.4. “The index is continuing to improve as it did prior to Christmas,” a broker said. “There is enough buying around to force people to pay up a bit to get themselves set.” Another dealer said a lack of selling by local institutions had also helped lift the market. Most of the buying was concentrated in the industrials sector where quality stocks were in demand, dealers said. The all-industrials index rose to 2584 and the allresources to 940.5, while the gold marker fell to 1760.5 after gold bullion lost over SUS 6 an ounce in overseas trading during the Christmas long week-end. Gold was trading at 5U5408.20/70 an ounce in Sydney late on Wednesday afternoon, down sharply from Friday’s close at 5U5412.50/ 413.00. National turnover was a meagre 41.40 million shares worth sAustB2.93M, with rises exceeding falls by 126 to 110. Brokers said today’s turnover would be boosted by the

expiry of options in several major stocks including CRA, CSR, Westpac and Western Minins.
