In brief
Firework calls A fireworks display at Queen Elizabeth II Park prompted numerous calls to the police from North Beach residents last evening. Concerned residents told the police they thought they could hear gunfire, Senior Constable Gary Tibbotts said. The firework display was held with a Carols by Candlelight event organised by the Rotary Club of Pegasus. ■ Driver checks Traffic officers stopped more than 2000 motorists at checkpoints in Christchurch at the week-end. Seventy-seven drivers were given breath screening tests. Of these 12 were then given an evidential test, one a blood test, and three were arrested, up to 9 p.m. yesterday. Normal patrols made 21 screening tests, 17 evidential tests, one blood test, and five were arrested. Checkpoints were set up late last evening in eastern Christchurch to coincide with the end of the Carols by Candlelight firework display at Queen Elizabeth II Park, a Ministry of Transport spokesman said. A child suffered minor injuries from the crash which happened at 10.34 a.m. Boat found A $22,000 cabin cruiser stolen from the front lawn of an Avondale property was found at the week-end. The 5m Arco boat, Shadow 1, was found still on its trailer in Guthries Road, Belfast, on Saturday. It had been taken from Mr Ron Williams’ Ulverstone Drive home early on Friday. The boat was stripped of lifejackets, tools, a depth sounder and motor badges. It was undamaged. The man’s name and condition in Christchurch Hospital were unavailable last evening. The accident happened on Saturday at 5.10 p.m. A man, aged 19, suffered serious arm injuries when the car he was travelling in hit a parked vehicle on Glandovey Road, Fendalton, on Saturday at 7 p.m. Three other occupants suffered minor and moderate injuries. Home guide A guide to home ownership has been published by the Housing Corporation. The Minister of Housing, Mr Hunt, said on Saturday that the booklet, “Do You Want To Own Your Own Home?,” provided a checklist of important points for people thinking of buying a house. It listed decisions to make when searching for a house, such as location and matching the right house to personal needs. Other sections listed sources of help and advice for prospective home buyers and explained how mortgages worked.—PA. Muldoon better Sir Robert Muldoon was yesterday described by Green Lane Hospital staff as being in a satisfactory and comfortable condition. According to Lady Muldoon, the former Prime Minister is getting out of bed for short periods and is undergoing physiotherapy. She said Sir Robert tired quickly, however, and was receiving visits only from family members.—PA
