Brisk Sunday trading at Chch malls
By
RICHARD CRESSWELL
Shopping malls in Christchurch reported brisk trade yesterday as city shoppers took advantage of Sunday trading. The manager of Merivale Mall, Mr Brian Williams, said there was a lot of interest in Sunday shopping from men, who wanted to shop and buy for wives or partners. Hornby, Linwood, and New Brighton shopping centres also
reported good trade, although at some malls it had tailed off by 3 p.m. Mrs Jeanette Hoogerwf, the chief executive officer of the New Brighton District Business Association, said trade had been as good as last week, with 97 per cent of shops open. The New Brighton area had initially been refused permission to open on Sundays and was now “making the most” of the amended legislation for Christ-.
mas and New Year. Mr Williams said Merivale had not planned to open on the Sundays but had been forced into it by the legislation to compete with other centres. “I am in favour of it, but it will be difficult for some if there is Sunday trading all year.” He said late-night shopping would disappear next year in favour of Saturday and Sunday trading, but many shops would go
back to six-day trading once the Christmas period was over. He said the mall would be open again this Sunday. The manager of Hornby Mall, Mr Mark Smith, said trading had been good, and there was a lot of support for Sunday trading. The Farmers Trading Colombo Street store manager, Mr Keri Melind, said all stores were open yesterday, and sales were similar to Saturday trading.
