School abolishes caning
,PA, o ; Dunedin ' Caning has been abolished at Otago Boys’ High School in Dunedin, staff members have confirmed. The rector, Mr Michael McMillan, would only say caning Ijad been discqurschool oVer the last few years.
“Personally, it is something I have wanted to have done for a long time,” he said. In an interview last year, the school's 125th anniversary, Mr McMillan said he preferred the use of counselling as .a form of rehabilitation.
«. “The emphasis at the : school is On discipline and learning, not just punishment,” he said. “Teachers work with the students and help them in many ways. Corporal pjjnishment is a small part of school life.”
