Success for Kiwi
NZPA-AP Sacramento New Zealand’s Bruce Blair won the masters section of the annual California International Marathon yesterday. The New Zealander, aged 42, ran a good time of 2:24:08 while American Mary Wood, aged 44, claimed the women’s masters section in 2:50:37. But it was Nan Doak-Davis who took centre stage when she pulled away from an injured Margaret Groos at the half-way point to win the annual California International Marathon, on her marathon debut.
Doak-Davis, aged 27, the current United States 10,000 m champion, won in a time of 2:33:11. : American Budd Coates, aged 32, passed Sammy Rotich with about one I.6km remaining to win the men’s division in 2:14:07.
Rotich, aged 32, a Kenyan who lives in New Mexico, was second in 2:14:40 with Jerry Marsh, aged 26, a last-minute entrant, third in 2:15.20. <
Doak-Davis and Groos, the 1988 women’s Olympic trials marathon winner, ran together for the first half of the race. ; But Groos began to suffer from leg problems and eventually withdrew.
