Petrol prices increase

By

SUSAN COOK

Christchurch service stations have raised the price of petrol up to 2c a litre after wholesale price increases during the last week.

A Shell spokesman said Christchurch was still the most competitive market in New Zealand. The series of wholesale price rises which prompted the retail increases were attributed to higher transport costs and more expensive crude oil. Caltex, which has the smallest market share of the main fuel companies in New Zealand, was the first to raise prices, lifting them 0.62 cents a litre last Wednesday.

Neither Shell nor Mobil will reveal how much they have increased their prices.

BP, which holds nearly a third of the market share, increased the wholesale price o.Bc a litre last Sunday.

Several Christchurch retailers have opted to leave prices unchanged, in the face of increasing competition.
