TABLE TENNIS

Avonside 1 moved further into the lead in the fourth round of the premier grade of the Canterbury Table Tennis Assocition’s summer inter-club competition.

It is a clear leader with 39 points, but there is still little between the next four teams. After the latest round Riccarton 3 is on 28, Riccarton 1 on 26, Riccarton 2 on 24 and Linwood 23. Bottom-placed Avonside 2 seems almost certain to have to play the promotion relegation match against the top A team, which is an Avonside team comprising Brent Maitland, Daniel Astle and Lisa Astle. If the A team wins it has the option of moving up the grade to premier for the next series of rounds. This week is the final round of the first series. In the latest premier round Avonside 1 easily beat Linwood. Robert Jongenburger did well to upset Graeme Rhind, but Avonside 1 won 9-2. In the match between Riccarton 3 and Riccarton 1, John Armstrong won all three singles for the no 3 side while for Riccarton 1 Albert Yee and Mark Lockhart both won two singles. Riccarton 3 virtually won the match by taking both doubles.

Riccarton 2 took an early lead of 5-2 against Avonside 2, but then lost the second doubles and only a win by Glen Harris prevented a 5-6 loss. For Avonside 2, Brian Wilson had three good singles wins and Bert Thompson won two. For Riccarton, Johnny Armstrong won two. Results.—
