Chathams plan goes to Cabinet
By
OLIVER RIDDELL
in Wellington Recommendations on the economic future of the Chatham Islands have gone to the Cabinet for its consideration next week. This comes after a meeting this week of the special Cabinet Committee on the Chatham Islands.
It was considering supplementary recommendations from the Lincolnbased consultants appointed in June to review the Chatham Islands economy and whose main report was released in September.
Since then, the consultants have been back on the Chathams discussing their report and explaining aspects of it.
The member of Parliament for Lyttelton, Dr Peter Simpson, whose constituency includes the Chathams, will visit Chatham and Pitt islands next week for public meetings on progress. Later this month the Minister of Internal Affairs and Local Government, Dr Bassett, in whose portfolio responsibility for the Chathams falls, will also visit the Cfyathams. The main sticking point between, the Government and ; the Chatham Islanders has been the level( of State funding needed to maintain the structure for the Chatwhich the consultants proposed.
