Dull trading on Aust. market

NZPA-AAP Sydney Australia’s sharemarket finished slightly higher in subdued trading yesterday after a 42-point surge on Wall Street on Tuesday failed to inspire similar local enthusiasm. The all ordinaries index finished 2.4 points higher at 1648.6. A fall of nearly SUS 3 an ounce in the price of gold overseas on Tuesday, sent the •gold index down 27.4 points to 1593.1, taking the shine off the gold-led market rally of the last two days. Brokers said trading was very dull. National turnover was a meagre 93.30 million shares worth sAustl42.24M, with falls narrowly outnumbering rises. The all industrials index rose 8.4 points to 2632.4, and the all resources slipped 1.7 to 903.6. TNT was one of the few bright spots in yesterday’s trading. The transport giant rose 10c to 310 on turnover of 3.43 M shares worth sAustlO.s4M, after jumping

12c on Tuesday. Brokers said the rise came as investors took a bullish view of TNT’s future performance after Tuesday’s announcement of a 70 per cent slump in first quarter net profits as a result of the pilots’ dispute. Elsewhere in the transport sector, Mayne Nickless gained 12c to 640 and Brambles was steady at 1345. The market leader, BHP, rose 2c to 942, CSR 9c to 500 and Lend Lease Corp 30c to 1230. But Burns Philp shed 6c to 359 and Coles Myer 8c to 868. .
