Israeli M.P.s defy leaders
NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem Several Israeli Labour Party legislators defied their leaders yesterday by sitting out a no-confid-ence vote in a show of frustration against the hardline policies .of Israel’s Prime Minister, Yitzhak Shamir.
The coalition led by Mr Shamir’s rightist Likud Party easily defeated the six motions by Left-wing and Arab parties by a 3413 note with six abstentions, ending a stormy seven-hour session.
Only a handful of Labour’s 28 members of Parliament — excluding Cabinet Ministers — heeded appeals by
Labour’s Deputy Prime Minister, Shimon Peres, and the Defence Minister, Yitzhak Rabin, to support the coalition in which the party is the junior partner.
Four Labour members sat passively through the electronic tally while the rest “voted with their legs” by leaving the chamber or staying away from Parliament altogether. It was a political victory for a dovish Labour faction leader, Haim’ Ramon, who urged party members to send a strong message of disapproval on the stalled Middle East peace efforts.
