Riccarton showdown looms
Auckland correspondent The Cambridge three-year-old, Eurostar, is headed for a memorable clash with the Central Districts’ top secondseason galloper, Finnegan Fox, in the $200,000 New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas (1600 m at Riccarton on November 8. Eurostar, the Cambridge Breeders’ Stakes winner, produced a good dress rehearsal for the Group One event when clearing away from a moderate line-up in the Okareka 1400 at Rotorua
on Saturday. Although unhappy in the extra-heavy going, Eurostar was impressive in scoring by 2 l / 2 lengths from King Webster. “He was doing nothing at the 600 metres today and it was only when he got balanced in the straight that he made any progress,” said rider Michael Coleman after the event. “It was his class that saw him through.” Eurostar has not struck a suitable firm track this campaign and Coleman
warns that when the horse does he will improve out of sight.
“He will really wind up on good ground,” said Coleman. “I hope we strike a good track at Riccarton. He’ll be the one to beat if he does.”
Eurostar, a son of Star Way and Eustaci, has now won four times and is well on the way to recouping the $lBO,OOO Bruce Maiden outlaid for him as a yearling. He has won almost $72,000.
