Merivale-Papanui, New Brighton both first innings winners

Merivale-Papanui and New Brighton secured a first innings lead over Heathcote and Upper Riccarton respectively after the first day of round two of the senior suburban cricket competition on Saturday. Heathcote won tlje toss at Edgar Mclntosh Park and chose to bat. However its tactics to play across the line on the damp track resulted in several catches and all 10 wickets falling with only 91 runs on the board.

Wayne Ward was the only batsman to excel scoring 21 runs. Merivale-Papanui took a six wicket haul for 35 runs and Gary Saunders was its henchman.

Saunders was also in sharp form with the bat scoring an undefeated 28 runs. Barny Cleverly's score of 14 was enough to see Merivale-Papa-nui out of early trouble when it was seven wickets down for 41 runs. It scored 95 for eight before declaring shortly before 5.30 p.m. Warren Cresswell was a useful bowler for Heathcote. Heathcote lost the two quick wickets of Tony Collins and Cresswell was 13 for two at the end of the day. Upper Riccarton lost some quick wickets. It lost its first wicket with only four runs on the board and then a consistent fall of wickets followed. It was dismissed with only 89 runs. Andrew Kennedy scored 24 and Wayne McWhirter scored 23 and combined, that was over half of the team’s runs. The most effective New Brighton bowler was Roger Evans who had a five wicket bag for thirty-six runs from 12 overs. Phil Harris and Andrew Knowles chipped in with some useful wickets. Ken Oxnam and Derek Burrell combined in an impressive second wicket partnership after the first wicket of Gary McLean fell at 13. Oxnam contributed 41 runs in the 60 run partnership. Burrell scored 44 and shortly after Brighton declared at 113 for three. It took 40min for Upper Riccarton to crumble with three wickets falling in the last session and had 26 runs on the board. Harewood gave a worthy

challenge to Hornby at Denton Park and the match was evenly poised. Harewood won the toss and sent Hornby in to bat. Hornby’s tail was down after faltering to be 93 for eight. However a determined effort by Finlay Davidson along with the tailenders, Greg Ayers and Ross McGrail, carried Hornby’s score through to 156 when it was dismissed in the final over. Davidson finished undefeated on 31.

Wayne Wilson (Harewood) was worth his salt as the former Canterbury selector and Lancaster Park bowler took six wickets for 50 runs from 17 overs.

Harewood responded during its turn at the bat with a sound start. Tony Adams scored 21 and wicket-keeper, Gary Thomson, blasting a quick thirty with n,o singles. It appeared comfortable at 93 for four but a further four wickets fell with only one run added. It then composed itself to finish 102 for eight with eight overs left.

Halswell chose to bat first at St Leonards Square and amassed 202 runs from fifty overs with the sacrifice of nine wickets. It did not lose its first wicket until 72 runs. Don Braid and Steve Booth led Sumner’s attack taking seven of the wickets between them and Grant Carr chipped in with a handy two. Sumner trailed by 56 runs with 12 overs and seven wickets in hand. In the lower grades, the third C did not play because some grounds were too wet. There was only one hat-trick scored.
