Democracy
Sir,—l support Bill Barry’s call for more accountable government, particularly in view of surreptitious erosion of our fundamental parliamentary democracy, as noted in these columns by Sue Hunt. Government is a good servant, but a fearful master, and the marriage between the media and politicians has created the myth of government as the cure for all ills. Government is the disease! Only when we shackle politicians to their service roles (as was promoted by an Integrity pledge campaign some years ago) will we regain control of our destiny. As voters we need to wake up to our role as employers. Scrub the carte blanche legislation and remuneration; we need to strictly define M-P.s’ freedoms and limitations for them.—Yours, etc.,
KEN BROUGHAM. October 17, 1989.
