London quiet, down
NZPA-Reuter London Share prices were mostly lower in quiet late trading on tracking declines on Wall Street. Dealers said fears of a repeat of the 1987 stock crash had faded but investors remained wary of Wall Street’s volatility. Price changes were generally modest ahead of British September trade data due on Tuesday, but a few doublefigure movements were seen in special situation stocks. Among leading issues, BAT was 5p lower at 778, the second most active stock with a turnover of 7.6 M shares. BAT said it bought 4M of its own shares on Friday but did not give the price of the purchases. BAT on Thursday
won shareholder approval to buy back up to 10 per cent of its own shares to enhance earnings a share. It quickly picked up 2.5 M shares at 785 p a share.
