Policy talks for National

By

OLIVER RIDDELL

in Wellington

The National Party’s 12 frontline members of Parliament will spend two days in retreat in Rotorua next week to discuss policy development and campaign strategy. This means that National’s newly demoted No. 13 ranked member of Parliament, Mr Winston Peters, is excluded from attending even though he enjoys more public support than the 12 together. The meeting was scheduled some time ago and would have included Mr Peters had he not been demoted this week. The newly promoted Mr John Banks (Whangarei) will attend instead. The Leader of the Opposition, Mr Bolger, said National was well advanced with its work on policy packages that reflected the party’s commitment to lower taxes, leaner Government, private enterprise growth and more effective provision of social services.

“We have more than 40 policy proposals to consider,” he said.
