Kaikoura Council

Continued from pg3s

on the County Town and Community Council for many years. I am on the school committee and am charter president of the Lions Club and have been a member for 25 years. I enjoy fishing, gardening, travelling, horse racing and golfing. Don McKenzie also standing for mayoralty. Arnold William Old “I have experience which should be useful to the Kaikoura District Council. If I am elected I promise forthright but unbiased representation of both town and country matters,” says Arnold Old. My three main aims

will be retention of the Kaikoura District as a separate authority, greater community involvement in council affairs, to provide a reliable, adequate and clear water supply. My general intention is to listen to all responsible suggestions for community improvement and to make appropriate ■ recommendations to council. I am married with four adult children. I was general manager of the Southland Education Board from 1975 to 1988.1 am a Rotary youth director, a vestry member of St Peters, a volunteer ambulance driver, a member of ‘Friends of the Hospital’ and enjoy community service and sporting activities.” Errol Malcolm Parker “I am 50, a former RNZAF pilot and training officer, commercial pilot

and aviation correspondent,” says Errol Parker. He joined NZBC TV as director-producer, training television reporters of CHTV-3, spent 10 years in Australia with television and print news media. At present he is the NelsonMarlbbrough reporter for “The Farmer.” A company director with qualifications in business management and real estate and rural valuations. He is married with three children. “My wife is residential manager of Kaikoura’s I.H.C. My policies include a 12-month rate freeze, a satisfactory town water supply and for all district water systems, looking at catchment board rates which are a huge burden, accountability to ratepayers and seeking their opinions rather than deliver edicts by fait accompli.” Valerie Reinke “I am hoping to repre-

sent the residents of South Bay of whom I have been one for the past 30 years. This will not be my only concern. Never having been a councillor I am very willing to learn. If elected I will carry out my duties to the best of my ability,” says Valerie Reinke. lan Norman Walker “It is my ambition to retain the seat which I have filled on the council for the past six years,” says lan Walker. I wish to retain the identity of Kaikoura, as over the next three years it will be a very crucial time to prove that we as a council can keep our district as an individual area, rather than be forced to become a Ward of the NelsonMarlborough region. Both rural and urban areas will be subject to major changes due to reform,

including roading, rating systems, noxious weeds, pest destruction, etc. As the rating system is on the increase each year there are certain avenues I wish to pursue to control the rates to an affordable level. Clean water supply and stable footpaths, foreshore and South Bay maintenance are a few of the issues I wish to pursue. Maintenance of all rural aspects is another area of concern. I am married with two adult children. I have served six years on the Community council. I am chief fire officer of the Kaikoura Volunteer Brigade and a Lions Club member. Also standing: Lindsay Clemett, Edwin Dalzell, Ronald Inkersell, Monica Mansbridge and Turia Taylor.
