Student fees
Sir, — When I first attended university in 1936 the fees for
four science subjects were in today’s money, $1750. We had to pass at least two units a year. Bursaries were worth $250 a year in today’s money. Of course wants were fewer — no flatting, firm landladies instead; no carparking troubles, no student cars, just bikes and trams; no liquor on site; no condom machine. We were mostly part-timers. Such privations helped to keep our minds on the job. —Yours, etc., M. LYONS. September 18, 1989.
