Rifle charge sentence
PA Wellington A Wellington truck driver who took out a loaded rife while police surrounded his house, was sentenced in the High Court at Wellington to four months’ periodic detention and six months’ supervision. The Chief Justice, Sir Thomas Eichelbaum, ordered Craig William Ross, aged 26, to attend counselling for anger management. “You took matters close to the brink,” said his Honour.
Ross was appearing for
sentence after having earlier pleaded guilty in the District Court at Wellington to a charge of unlawful possession of a firearm.
Sir Thomas said Ross's reaction to the arrival of the police armed offenders squad on July 30 after a domestic incident, was to get one of three hunting rifles from a cabinet and walk around the house.
Sir Thomas said he acciepted Ross had done this only for 30 seconds before coming to his senses.
Ross also had no stable employment.
