Winds slow yachts

PA Wellington The New Zealand skipper, Peter Blake, predicted the Pampero, a vicious wind pattern off the South American coast, could be the sting in the tail end of the first leg of the Whitbread round the world yacht race. “The last stretch could be quite interesting,” Blake said in a phone call from the leading yacht, Steinlager 2, yesterday. “We expect the Pampero to slow us up a bit then it should travel north and catch out the boats behind.” The cooler weather and squally winds have already caught out two of the front runners — British Satquote Defender and Gatorade both blew out their mainsails and lost time. Last night Steinlager 2 was off the coast of Uruquay with under 500 miles to run to Punta Del Este. The lead over the Swiss entry, Merit, had reduced to 187 miles and her average speed was four knots.
