Unemployment

Sir,—The delicate sensibilities of the Auckland East area manager of the Bank of New Zealand are offended by “hostile, abusive, aggressive, poorly dressed, drunk and offensive” social welfare beneficiaries (September 18). Would the area manager like to be shielded from such unpleasant exposure? The reality is that unemployment is not nice. Good clothes presuppose sufficient funds and self-esteem to buy them. Nice manners may be a low priority for people suffering from boredom and frustration who have learned that they do not matter. It is easy to be critical of such behaviour from the safety of a presumably wellpaid position and without experience of being unemployed. Neither should the area manager be under the impression that hostility, abusive, aggressive, drunk and offensive behaviour are the preserve of the poorly dressed and unemployed. As a professional person now unemployed, I can vouch to the contrary.—Yours, etc.,

MARTIN DAVIES. September 18, 1989.
