Bain in intensive care

PA Palmerston North The Marton apprentice jockey, Chris Bain, was still in a serious condition in the intensive care unit of Palmerston North Hospital yesterday after undergoing an operation to find the extent of internal injuries sustained in a fall at Otaki on Saturday. Bain was catapulted from his mount, Free Go, into the running rail and suffered severe injuries to his rib cage. Several ribs were fractured, a lung was punctured and his spleen ruptured. His father said from Marton yesterday that “he is as well as can be expected at this stage,” adding that his son was in for a long recoveiy period once out of intensive care. Bain, who began his apprenticeship with Brian Anderton at Wingatui, started this season in grand fashion and his win on Danish Delight at Awapuni 11 days ago was his fifth since August 1. He rode four winners at last month’s Grand National meeting, including Free Go.

He was due to complete his apprenticeship in November, but had signed on for extra time with Evan Rayner because previous injuries had sidelined him for six months or more.
