Dickson triumphs
Chris Dickson, of New Zealand, beat Australia’s Peter Gilmour, 2-1, in the final of the World Championship of Match Race Sailing at Lymington on Saturday. Gilmour, the Kookaburra 111 helmsman in the Fremantle America’s Cup, looked like crushing the defending world champion, 2-0, before his 36-foot sloop was dismasted just after rounding the second windward mark in the second race. In the third and deciding race, Dickson, the skipper of Kiwi Magic in the 1987 America’s Cup, capitalised on Gilmour’s error in crossing the line early and surged off in near gale force winds to take the title—NZPA-AAP.
