Paterson unavailable
Canterbury will defend its national inter-provincial teams’ golf title at Hastings in November without Brent Paterson, its regular No. 1 since 1983. Paterson, whose win at the last hole against a fellow New Zealand amateur, Colin Taylor (Waikato), at Shirley last year clinched the championship for Canterbury, transferred to Auckland in July. Although he is now in Taiwan representing New Zealand and will play in the Pacific teams’ event in Japan in. October, Paterson has told the Canterbury selectors that his work commitments will prevent him from competing in the Tower-sponsored national tournament. Canterbury’s non-playing captain, Barry Cotton, said yesterday that he was confident the province would still have a team of five capable of retaining the title.
