NZPA-Reuter Washington The strategy announced by the United States President, George Bush, also included: • Increased funding for United States programmes aimed at streetlevel drug dealing and for federal law enforcement efforts, including border interdiction. • A bid to local governments to step up the prosecution of drug users, including the revocation
of driving licences for drug offences. • A requirement that colleges implement tough anti-drug policies as a condition for receiving federal funds. • Stepping up policing of public housing projects to wipe out drug trafficking and use. • The promotion of anti-drug rules in private industry, including increasing the testing of workers in positions in-
volving public safety.. • The encouragement of alternative sentencing for non-violent drug offenders, including boot camps and house arrest. • Improved intelligence to help disrupt drug networks and money laundering. • More educational programmes to discourage drug use and an expanded treatment to rehabilitate people hooked oh drugs.
