Blaze triggered by processing unit?

By

BARRY CLARKE

A faulty processing unit is believed to have triggered a fire which caused damage estimated at $500,000 to a central city photographic laboratory. The fire broke out in a laboratory of Hanafins Photographic, Ltd, in Hereford Street, about 6 a.'fn. yesterday and extensively damaged part of the building.

Six fire appliances and 25 firemen using breathing apparatus had the blaze under control by 6.30 a.m. The company’s managing director, Mr Lawrence Hanafin, said the fire seemed to have started in one of three photo processing machines which was set to switch on automatically just before 6 a.m. That mafnine, valued at $150,000, was destroyed. It was too early to assess whether

the other two units will be written off, he said.

Staff were busy yesterday salvaging hundreds of rolls of film damaged in the fire.. Prints were destroyed but Mr Hanafin is confident most of the film will be reprocessed.

The joints would be available from the company’s Armagh Street branch in a couple of days?
